While it is often depicted as a bird, I was drawn to a stylized version that resonated even more deeply: the Sankofa heart. This elegant symbol, shaped into a heart, represents the same core Akan principle: “go back and get it.” It speaks to the idea of returning to your roots to find your heart, your love for self, and your connection to your community. It teaches us that our past is not just a lesson to be learned, but the very source of our love and identity.
This was the revelation. This symbol taught me that reclaiming our history wasn't just an intellectual exercise; it was an act of heart. It was about finding ourselves and our love for our journey in the stories of those who came before us.
